Championing industry diversity
“I applied for the NextGen group because I’m passionate about spreading awareness in the industry to a younger audience,” says Jessica. “There’s so much diversity and opportunity in aviation beyond the traditional roles of pilots and crew. Tech companies play a vital role too, and I want to inspire younger women to see themselves in our industry.”
The NextGen Group, comprised of industry professionals under 35, works to set the direction of the association and pave the way for future talent. Jessica is especially proud of their internship program, which offers students one—to two-week practical experiences with member companies. “We’re opening doors for students to experience the aviation industry firsthand,” Jessica explains. “These internships provide valuable exposure to the diverse career paths available.”
From product specialist to industry ambassador
Since joining Avinode Group nine years ago as a Product Specialist, Jessica has witnessed the company’s and NextGen’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Her journey included a brief move into sales during parental cover before she advanced to her current Key Account Manager role in 2024.
“At Avinode Group, we embrace different nationalities and promote equality. Through the NextGen Group, we’re increasing awareness about the wide variety of job roles available in aviation and encouraging diverse talent to join our industry.”
Jessica highlights how The Air Charter Association plays a crucial role in uniting industry players, educating brokers, and improving collaboration through networking events and training programs. “The Association does a great job gathering industry players and educating brokers so everyone understands best practices,” she notes. “While there has historically been a UK focus, they’re now expanding training across Europe to enhance collaboration internationally.”
Addressing key industry challenges
The NextGen Group is tackling several hot topics, with optimization and sustainability at the forefront. “We’re examining how to improve efficiency in communication between operators and brokers,” Jessica explains. “Different working methods and handover practices can make tracking discussions and agreements challenging, especially during busy periods like summer.”
Sustainability is another focus area. “Both customers and governments are asking important questions about becoming CO2 neutral,” notes Jessica. The NextGen Group actively supports the Association’s Sustainability Working Group, developing practices to shape aviation’s environmental future.
Life outside
When she’s not advancing the aviation industry, Jessica can be found pursuing her passion for golf. Her dream destination? The legendary St Andrews Old Course in Scotland.
Through her work with the NextGen Group and her role at Avinode Group, Jessica Thunberg is helping to create a more diverse, sustainable, and efficient future for aviation while inspiring the next generation of industry professionals.
