For this month’s Special Edition of the Business IQ, we bring you a slightly different angle as we answer some points of interest for our members using data we share across Avinode and SchedAero.
You asked, so what is the average time from booking to departure?
The answer was very interesting and we had a surprise or two in there ourselves. Looking at approximately 18,000 trips over the past 12 months using the SchedAero system, we discovered:
- If the member response time is more than 48 hours, there is an 80% chance the trip is already booked
- Meaning 20% of the trips departing tomorrow, you will find out about today
- 75% of the trips departing in the next seven days do not exist as requests yet
- Scheduling more than three days in advance is at best only 40% accurate
The chart below highlights the percentage difference of the number of days between scheduling a trip and its departure: 19% depart the same day; 20% depart the next day; 9% depart two days later.
Days between a trip being scheduled and first leg departing

We considered that perhaps the pattern above was skewed by a few of the larger companies dominating the results. However we found that when we removed the largest 10 companies from the data, the pattern was still essentially the same. The trend was consistent across all companies, all sizes, and all number of bookings.
We then looked at the time from quoting to booking a flight. We discovered:
- 80% of departing flights were quoted within the previous 48 hours or less
- 90% of departing flights were quoted in within the previous 5 days
Johan Sjoberg, Business Manager of SchedAero, comments: “We were surprised by just how fast-moving a lot of our bookings are. We know that flight requests are often short notice in the business aviation world, but we didn’t realise that in some cases a matter of hours can make all the difference. Ultimately we can see that if companies don’t have a quick enough process to quote a trip request, the flight will often have already departed.
“We are constantly working to support our members in providing the best tools for them to take advantage of all potential business. Avinode’s Trips feature and SchedAero’s Scheduling System are just two examples of how members can ensure their workflow is as quick and smooth as possible. We are always adding new features and improving our offering, enabling our members to take every opportunity to win in the market – and as the data confirms, fast and faster are the key. ”
